A pair of owls, warded to the Professors in question:
Well, it might be a bit late, but here's the assignment you gave us, sir.
Harry Potter.
Well... Harry doesn't like to give up on anything. Anything. Even if he's going to get himself killed. He'll just keep on until he does it. I don't know, but I think the elemental saw that in him and it decided to back down. Other magical creatures/beings have had odd reactions to Harry, just because he is The Boy Who Lived; why not elementals?
Which is not to say I don't think Harry deserved it, or didn't work for it. Just... things happen that way to him, more often than not. It really bothers him; I think he'd have been happier if it hadn't worked. Which makes me wonder why the elemental wouldn't know that...
Arcadia Moon.
She's kind. That's all there is to it, I think. I mean I know everyone was surprised by her, but really, the elementals have personalities too. And after reading about them, and the way they've been treated and everything; I think it was probably surprised to be asked nicely. And answered her because of that, maybe even hoping it would encourage better behaviour from other summoners. Might be a vain hope, but if I were an elemental, i'd want to encourage her.
Belinda Rosier.
This is the other side of the coin; if some elementals would want to change things and encourage Arcadia, some would have to be comfortable with the way things are, too. Rosier is traditional, from what i've seen, in everything. Her attitude is just... Old World, 'The World should fall at my feet, because I am here.' Yes, she had to have the strength and everything, same as Harry had to, but the elemental would have recognized the way she was behaving and fallen into that pattern, I think.
Hannah Abbot
Because she's a hard worker. Really. It's rather the same thing as Rosier, but without the arrogance. Just the solid will to do it, with the knowledge that she was completely sure what she was doing behind it.
Thinking about everything; the traditions associated with Summoning, and those who succeeded...
I think maybe the people who first achieved this got it right for the wrong reasons. I remember reading once, somewhere I can't remember, that humans tend to think they have to conquer everything, that nature has to be forced to obey men. So those first wizards and witches who Summoned elementals went about it that way, and assumed that it was the right and only way because they had to struggle. The fight itself, because it fit how they thought of the world, was proof they'd done it right.
But I look at who succeeded in our class, especially Arcadia, and I think... maybe it's more about having something in common with the elemental, or could be. They exist by thier will, right? Maybe it's not that you have to force thier will to yours, but something in you has to match that them; that you have to provein some way that you can match them.
Well, I understand why I couldn't summon one, at least. Nothing in my personality is solid enough.
Owl To Professor McGonagall:
I'm sorry this is so late, Ma'am. But, may I have permission to go to Hogsmeade with Ernie Macmillian and a couple of friends, for his birthday dinner?
Thanks!
Neville Longbottom.

Yes, certainly, you have my permission to join Mr. MacMillian for his birthday dinner in Hogsmeade tonight. I hope you have a wonderful time!
